Students in the DePaul Marketing Internship program have many assignments designed to help them create better resumes, cultivate their networks (including working on their LinkedIn profiles and contacts, reaching out to DePaul alumni through our ASK program), working on their interview skills and most importantly, building their portfolio.The importance of a solid portfolio cannot be overstressed. During interviews for full-time positions, potential employers want to see evidence of accomplishment. Portfolios can help provide examples of those accomplishments. Interviewers often ask what the interviewee has done, the portfolio allows the person to share examples from concrete work that is spelled out on the pages or slides in the portfolio. DePaul Marketing Interns are asked to prepare a rigorous study of their work situation and to research its environment and to develop their own plans for what the company should be doing to reach stated goals. What follows here is a discussion of the structure of the project that all students prepared. This book is about the best of those documents.The project: Students were given the following format as a general outline for the internship project. In class they learn about the importance of having a portfolio to share with potential employers. The goal is to be able to offer a full understanding of how the students’ organization fits into its particular industry, how it approaches its marketing mix, how goals are set and what a plan looks like to meet the goals. The students are made aware, very early, that some information may be private, proprietary and thus cannot be offered in a public document like a student paper. This offers special and realistic challenges to the student therefore they are encouraged to involve their supervisors and others to review their work.
